Attitudes encouraged by the sport

At entry-level, target rifle shooting allows people over a wide range of physical fitness to compete, but as with any other sport, achieving top performance requires high levels of physical fitness, alertness and mental control. Like other individual-scoring sports such as diving, gymnastics etc, target rifle does not promote aggression because you compete against yourself. Although there is no intrinsic team structure in this sport, team events using aggregated scores are common, so a team spirit does evolve.

Appealing features as a sport

A non-aggressive, non-contact sport encouraging calmness and mental control.

  • Personal challenge: improvement is easy to review with electronic target systems
  • Level playing field: one of the few sports where people can genuinely compete on an equal basis, regardless of age, gender, fitness, or disability.
  • Low activity: allows the elderly & disabled to compete on an equal basis. Note: There are variations on this where disabilities or health considerations prevent a shooter from shooting prone, they may use a portable bench or table.
  • Low strength: allows women and young people to compete on an equal basis. No handicap scoring.

“Mingling with the club members, some representing Victorian and Australian, who are keen in sharing their knowledge about shooting, reading wind and reloading, allowed me to quickly progress enough to secure a few medals and be part of the team that won the Skene Shield in 2019.” Douw De Kock, Club member

Applying for membership

The induction process involes each new member applicant attending the club at a minimum of three times. On these occasion you will be encouraged to shoot either with your own rifle of the club rifles. If you’re not familiar with target shooting, it’s important that you experience the different disciplines so you can be sure the sport is right for you and it’s something that you can commit to.

During each visit we encourage you to speak with other club members. Many of our members shoot competitvely and have many years of experience in the sport and shooting in general.
